Bali, 17 May 2022 – After holding a scaled down event last year, the ‘Balinale’ – the prestigious Bali International Film Festival – returns to Bali’s movie screens with a complete program for its15th year to the Beachwalk Cinema XII from Thursday, 9 June until Sunday, 12 June. An impressive four days of newly released never seen before independent Indonesian and foreign movies will be shown to satisfy all movie enthusiasts’ and film communities’ tastes.
The festival’s founder and executive director, Deborah Gabinetti said, “we will bring for the first time to Indonesia a unique and live hologram presentation with Hong Kong producer and director Stanley Kwan or an innovative meet-and-greet and introduction to his critically acclaimed 1988 restored classic, Rouge as part of a section of films celebrating Hong Kong SAR 25th Anniversary.
A total of 63 films representing 26 countries with several World, Asian and International Premiers screened during the event. The festival will officially open with the World Premiere of Keluarga Cemara 2 on Thursday, 9 June with the film’s director Ismail Basbeth in attendance. The heart-warming inspirational movie is full of important life lessons told through humour.

This year’s festival will continue to follow its long traditional of presenting independent films bringing to Bali a wide array of genres, styles and languages including narrative features, documentaries, and short films as a combination of in-cinema and online.
The ‘Balinale’, recognised internationally as one of the premier film festivals in Southeast Asia, is known for its specialised knowledge and importance in supporting Indonesia’s independent cinema and promoting emerging and established Indonesian film makers.
According to long time Bali resident, Gabinetti, the mission of the festival is to promote independent cinema and showcase the best of Indonesian movie making, more and more of which are receiving global recognition at international film festivals such as the Locarno Film Festival, Toronto and Red Sea Festival in Saudi Arabia, South Korea’s Busan, and Seattle, among others.
Gabinetti, said, “it is our driving passion to expose Indonesian film alongside an international line-up, which we hope will drive pride and passion in our local film makers.
“We are seeing our film makers trying new and refreshing themes and genres beyond Indonesians’ fascination for violence and horror, to introducing themes around unknown heroes, women and cultures, while trialling new viewing platforms such as streaming as well as the traditional cinema. There is a re-emergence of Indonesia film industry, once the world’s third greatest producer of movies after Hollywood and Bollywood.
