Denpasar Targets Balinale Tourism Potential
The Denpasar City Administration is strategically positioning the 2026 Bali International Film Festival, or Balinale, as a primary catalyst for growth. This move aims to shift the city’s tourism landscape toward high-quality and culturally-driven visits.
By leveraging the prestige of the international cinema circuit, authorities aim to transform the provincial capital into a sophisticated hub that attracts a more selective global demographic.
During a press briefing on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Denpasar City Secretary, I Gusti Ngurah Eddy Mulya, emphasized that international film festivals possess a unique strategic value that transcends traditional sightseeing.
He noted that such events are instrumental in capturing a tourism segment that prioritizes cultural depth and creative engagement over mass-market attractions.
“The tourists we are looking for do not come just to enjoy the beaches and culinary offerings, but are also seeking cultural experiences and creativity. This is what we want to promote in Denpasar,” said Eddy Mulya, as quoted by Antara.
He further clarified that the city’s objective is focused on the qualitative enhancement of the tourism sector rather than a mere increase in visitor numbers. The city administration views Balinale as more than just an entertainment venue, but also as a vital space for cross-cultural interaction and the global exchange of ideas.
This vision aligns with Denpasar’s broader goal of building a destination brand rooted in heritage and modern creativity. Specifically, the administration intends to solidify the Sanur area as a premier cultural zone capable of hosting world-class international gatherings.
Eddy Mulya also reaffirmed the local administration’s commitment to acting as a strategic partner for the creative industry rather than a passive observer. He highlighted that the foundation of sustainable tourism lies in the empowerment of local talent and the creative ecosystem.
“The best investment is in young filmmakers, artists, and cultural communities who serve as the engines of the creative ecosystem,” he concluded.
