Festival’s New Date

Going up against the lingering effects of SARS-CoV-2, as well as adjusting with the government’s CHSE health and safety protocols, and now dealing with the recently extended PPKM (Community Activity Restrictions), has made programming the festival more difficult.

This time continues to be extremely challenging for Bali, its stakeholders, and its people. We consider the festival an important part of the community and want to utilize our resources to help get people to return and aid in the island’s recovery. The Festival Committee has therefore made the decision to postpone the festival to bring you a fuller program and one focused on growing its educational and filmmaker development.

We will continue to monitor the situation and consult with government agencies, our partners, and the cinema owners for updates. All in all, the festival’s first priority will always be the health and well-being of our audience members and staff.

The festival date will be moved to 18-21 November 2021. More details will be announced closer to the date.

The festival will continue to present a dedicated section to celebrate the films not shown in 2020 due to the cancellation. Any changes to our programs will be announced on our website and social media.

With this additional postponement, we hope to hold a combination of virtual and regulated in-person events to include theatrical screening that provides shared experience and anticipate the cinemas being fully operational by November. We aim to do justice to the thousands of hours of craftsmanship involved in the films’ creation and to ensure the best experience for our audience.

We regularly post updates about festival programs on our website and social media. Go to link.tree/bali.nale to discover more.

Bali International Film Festival, also known as Balinale, was established in 2007 as a platform to showcase thought-provoking, unique, and intriguing films from around the world and as a vehicle to support and promote Indonesian filmmakers and independent cinema.

In addition to presenting quality independent films, Balinale encourages the filmmaker to attend the festival.

We offer student workshops to aspiring young filmmakers and an opportunity to present their work to an international audience.

The festival invites foreign filmmakers to screen their films to an enthusiastic and potentially huge Indonesian market while providing them with an opportunity to network with Indonesian industry professionals and explore Indonesia for possible film projects.

Note: Balinale 2021 will see a combination of virtual and limited regulated in-person events.

Balinale screens an interesting line-up of entertaining and thought-provoking films from Indonesia and around the globe. We show films in cinema and hold open air community events and conduct educational workshops.

BalinaleX Industry Forum is a platform for the film industry to exchange creative ideas by holding discussions with visiting filmmakers.

Balinale actively participates and contributes to other industry events developing affiliations, such as; Motion Picture Association, Asia Pacific Screen Awards (Brisbane, Australia), ASEAN International Film Festival & Awards (Kuching, Malaysia), Asian Film Commissions Network (20 member countries), American Film Showcase and Sundance Institute's Film Forward.

The highlights of the main program are announced one month prior to the festival dates with updates provided weekly.

Films and Workshops

Since 2017 we have a juried competition with industry professionals from around the world as members.

Awards are presented in several artistic and technical categories for Feature, Documentary and Short films.

The festival aims to provide alternatives for movie-goers to see films outside of the mainstream on offer in local cinemas. We look for recent releases, eclectic, independent or classic films with a connection to the island of Bali.

We accept feature, documentary, short and animated films in all genres. Formats shown are DCP and MOV.

Call for Film Submissions will be announced well in advance of the festival. We use FilmFreeway for accepting submissions.

Balinale has a number of Indonesian films submitted each year with a percentage of the films screened coming from domestic filmmakers.

Submission Waiver Grants have been established by Founding Partner Bali Film Center to encourage and support Indonesian filmmakers.

Note: Balinale 2021 has decided to postpone this program until further notice.

The festival holds several discussion panels, seminars and workshops throughout the year with many of these programs offered free of charge to aspiring filmmakers and students interested in gaining further knowledge about filmmaking.

Through our professional industry associations, there are additional opportunities for networking and gaining possible employment within the industry.

Since 2007, we have held a number of workshops and seminars conducted by Oscar®, Emmy®, BAFTA®, Cannes and award-winning Indonesian filmmakers helping us to achieve our goals of bringing together films and their makers as a gathering of global creativity.
