The 17th Bali International Film Festival, in collaboration with the esteemed Asian Film Awards Academy (established in 2007 by Busan, Tokyo and Hong Kong International Film Festivals) presents the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation showcasing six exceptional films that offer a captivating glimpse into the vibrant world of Hong Kong cinema.
Balinale’s audiences will interact with the creative minds behind these films. Attend Q&A sessions with the legendary Stanley Kwan, producer of “Fly Me to the Moon,” and the film’s up-and-coming director Sasha Chuk, Wan Pin Chu, composer of “In Broad Daylight,” actress Rachel Leung, and Felix Tsang, Director (Programming & Operations) and Golden Scene Cinema Acquisitions Manager.

Yuen, 8 yrs old, moves to Hong Kong with her mother to reunite with her father. Everything in the city is dazzling and new but the family face poverty, and cultural barriers, and the and the father’s drug habit.
After her sister arrives, the girls try to appease their father but as they reach adolescence, start distancing from him.
As time passes, Yuen realizes all she loves and treasures stems from her childhood memories.

“Center Stage” is set during China’s silent movie era and revolves around the life of the legendary life of a gifted actress, Ruan Ling-yu. With her sensitive portrayal, Maggie Cheung Man-yuk took her story abroad and won the best actress award at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival.
In the spring of 1935, silent movie star Ruan Ling-yu took her own life, shocking the world.
Her funeral was attended by hundreds of thousands of mourning fans. Ruan entered the film world at the age of 16. In the short span of 9 years, she made 29 silent movies and became the idol of tens of thousands. As she rose to fame, she also rose to infamy with scandals over her private life. Her death at such an early age has given rise to much debate: did she kill herself because of her career? Or for love? In her farewell note, Ruan wrote four words–“criticism should be feared– and gave her final condemnation on the merciless public.
