FAQ

  • What is BALINALE?

Bali International Film Festival, also known as BALINALE, was established in 2007 by the non-government, not-for-profit Indonesian registered charity organization Yayasan Bali Taksu Indonesia as a platform to showcase thought provoking, unique and award-winning current releases from all genres produced by Indonesians and filmmakers from around the world.

  • When and where is it held?

Festival Dates: Sunday, 24 September - Saturday, 30 September 2017
Venue: Cinemaxx, Lippo Mall Kuta, Bali INDONESIA

  • What makes BALINALE different than other film festivals?

In addition to presenting quality films, BALINALE encourages the filmmaker to attend the festival to present their film and personally meet audience members.

We offer student workshops to aspiring young filmmakers throughout the year. We give local filmmakers an opportunity to present their work and network with international industry professionals.

The festival invites foreign filmmakers to screen their films to an enthusiastic and potentially huge Indonesian market. We also provide them an opportunity to explore Indonesia for possible film projects.

  • What are some of the main programs in the festival?

BALINALE screens an interesting line-up of entertaining and thought-provoking films from around the globe, holds an annual free Children's Film Program, free Open Air Cinema and conducts YOUNG INDONESIAN FILM CIRCLE educational workshops, host celebrity events, international gatherings and film premieres.

. This year, BALINALE proudly focuses on the 'Face of Diversity'.

Festival partners include American Film Showcase (AFS) in showing a series of AFS films throughout Bali and Indonesia in a lead up to the festival. http://americanfilmshowcase.usc.edu/.

The festival is also a forum for the film industry to exchange creative ideas by holding daily seminars with visiting filmmakers.

  • What is the overall criteria for film selections?

The festival aims to provide alternatives for movie-goers to see films outside of the mainstream on offer in local cinemas. We look for recent releases, eclectic, independent or studio films, classics with a connection to the island of Bali and films with limited commercial release.

We accept feature, documentary, short and animated films in all genres. Formats shown are DCP, MOV and DVD in the Open Air Cinema.

  • How can I submit my film?

Call for Film Submissions will be announced six months prior to the festival. We use FilmFreeway for accepting submissions.

  • Are there many Indonesian films shown?

BALINALE has a number of Indonesian films submitted each year with a percentage of the films screened coming from domestic filmmakers.

  • Are there film competitions?

Audience Choice Awards are presented to the most popular films as voted by the film-going public. Categories are: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Indonesian, Best Short and Best Overall Film.

  • What are the BALINALE workshops?

The festival holds a number of discussion panels, seminars and workshops throughout the year under the YOUNG INDONESIAN FILM CIRCLE educational program. Many of these programs are offered free of charge to aspiring filmmakers and students interested in gaining further knowledge about filmmaking.

Through our professional industry associations there are additional opportunities for networking and gaining possible employment within the industry.
