In medieval centuries, a handful of nutmegs were worth more than a crate of gold in European Markets. European countries raced to find spice islands, fighting over Banda, the only place where nutmegs grew. The Dutch eventually gained monopoly. Indonesia saw its first slavery and massacre in Banda, but there too the spirit of nationalism and multicultural identity was born.
